Taking Prescription Medications Prescribed for Someone Else is Illegal

Possessing a controlled substance without a prescription could lead to a prison sentence and/or a substantial fine.

Prescription and OTC medications may be abused in several ways. People may be unaware of the dangers of sharing medications and unknowingly contribute to abuse by sharing unused pain relievers with family or friends.

From 2008 to 2012, the number of juvenile and adult arrestees in one California county reporting prescription drug misuse increased (from 25 to 40 percent and 36 to 38 percent respectively.)
